It was our privilege to welcome Hamsa Thota, who will be the next District Governor for District 6920, to which the Skidaway Island Rotary Club belongs, to our meeting on Wednesday. Hamsa has had a long and distinguished career in the service of Rotary, both in the U.S., Sri Lanka, China, and India.
He joined a Rotary Club in St. Simon’s Island in 1978 and became its president five years later. He received the District Governor’s New Club Builder Award for starting two new Rotary Clubs, Jekyll Island and Camden County. He has served as Coastal Georgia Area Coordinator for the Polio Plus Campaign, District Group Study Exchange Chairman for India. He has served the GRSP (Georgia Rotary Student Program) for many years and has multiple wards for service from several Rotary clubs and from Rotary International.

Polio Plus has been a major benefactor of work by Hamsa in India, and he has organized polio camps, constructed latrines, dug drinking water wells and distributed wheelchairs for the disabled. He has an interest in welfare and education in villages in India, where he has instituted sewing machines for women (so that they can earn a living,) school desks, drinking water and sanitation facilities in government run schools.

In a brief presentation, Hamsa showed pictures of schools in Sri Lanka; he is advocating for the training of teachers in early childhood education in rural areas in that country. The endeavor is supported by grants from the Rotary Foundation and there are training centers in rural areas throughout the island. There are a half a million children to be served in these areas, and 30,000 teachers, about a half of whom are currently certified. The Rotary Foundation is also supporting a Pediatric Cancer Hospital in Sri Lanka.

Hamsa and his wife are Paul Harris fellows. He is the owner of a consulting business, Innovation Business Development, and his wife is an Ophthalmologist. His daughter, who is an engineer and economist, works with her father, and his son is an Emergency Physician stationed with the U.S. Marines in Japan.
