This past week some 45 Rotarians, spouses and friends participated in a combined work/social Pack “n” Play event at America's Second Harvest. During the first hour, we built, packed, sealed and palletized 200 boxes containing juice; cereal; canned vegetables, fruits and protein; and pasta. These particular boxes went out to seniors and families in Vidalia in Toombs County as part of the Mobile Food Pantry Program where Second Harvest trucks distribute this food on the spot at a prescheduled time and place.  After packing, we then enjoyed a cocktail hour in the warehouse setting with excellent hors d’oeuvres prepared by their chef.  This evening was a great start to our 2016 service project and social calendar.
The Rotary Club of Skidaway Island partners with America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia to help alleviate hunger in a 21 county area in southeastern Georgia.  We continue to sponsor a Kids Café program at Thunderbolt Elementary School which provides a hot meal to qualified students each school day.  In just this one program, Second Harvest provides over 400,000 meals annually at over 40 Kids Café locations.  Their Summer Feeding Program provides an additional 150,000 meals at over 60 locations. Each calendar quarter, a group from our Rotary Club also works in assembly line fashion in the Second Harvest warehouse to pack 600-700 boxes containing a healthy variety of foodstuffs to be distributed to needy seniors at the end of the month when many are low on funds.
